Important description of the Island of Bali
LAUTS, Ulrich Gerhard.Het eiland Balie en de Balienezen. ![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, G.J.A. Beijerinck, 1848. 8vo. Original half cloth with marbled paper over boards. Lithograph on title and a folding map of the island Bali. (2), VIII, 285, (1) pp. Rare work by Ulrich Gerard or Gerhard Lauts who was born in Amsterdam in 1787 and died in Utrecht in 1865. After having been teacher of Dutch language and literature at the Athenaeum in Brussels, he was appointed professor at the Royal Maritime Institute at Medemblik in 1830. Without ever having been in the Dutch East Indies he wrote this book on Bali, containing a general description of the island of Bali, the political system, the status of women, slavery, trade, etc., and the connections with the Dutch from their first arrival in 1597 till 1848. The account was written as a result of the difficulties the Dutch had encountered in the years 1846-48 trying to gain more grip and influence on the virtually still independent local Balinese prince's and radjah's. The military situation had deteriorated recently and Lauts enjoyed the pleasure to see that his book certainly contributed to a restart of the Dutch actions aimed at gaining full control of the rebellious Island. The three supplements contain details on the trade and shipping between Java and Bali in the years 1837-1846, the manifest to the Radjah of Beliling and the state of the Dutch colonial army on Bali in the year 1846 and an official account of the expedition to Bali in 1848. Fair copy of a rare work.- (Some wormholes throughout with loss of a few letters, partly repaired, binding sl. damaged).
