Contemporary three quarter calf, spine raised in 6 compartments with decorated ornaments and author's name and tiltle in gilt. Marbled sides. Folding map with red and blue lines of the route of the journey of the Southern division of the Cape of Good Hope colony, engraved for Latrobe's journal, (53 x 27 cm). 12 full page coloured aquatints by J. Bluck after R. Cocking from the original sketches by Latrobe, 4 full page engravings of coastal views. VII, (1), 406, (2). First edition of a voyage to South africa by Latrobe on behalve of the United Brethren mission directors to visit the missionaries at Genadendal and Groenekloof and to search for new locations to establish new missionaries. There is a full description of the district of Groenekloof and of the missionary settlements north of Cape Town. The journey started on March 5, 1816, the route taken from Genadedal being via Zwellendam, Zeekogat, Welgelegen, Uitenhage to the Witter River and thence to the Little Fish River, where the journey came to an end. On the way back Latrobe visited Plettenberg and Mossel Bays. The plates are one of the finest of the period, showing scenes and views. Good copy. - (Some occ. browning or spotting).
