Ad 1: Reissue of the first Dutch edition of an important work on sundials by Philippus Lansbergius. The first original edition was published in Latin titled: 'Horologiographia plana, as part of his collected works, Opera Omnia, posthumously published in 1663 by the Middelburg publisher Zacharias Roman who had printed most of the works of Lansbergius (1561-1632). The text was translated and edited three years later by Jacob Mogge, with the title 'Beschrijving der vlacke sonne-wijzers (Middelburg, Zacharias Roman, 1666), and published together with Mogge's Inleydinge der Sonne-Wysers (Middelburg, Roman, 1666). Lansbergius (Philip van Lansberghe) was a reformed minister and astronomer at Antwerp before he went to the Northern Netherlands after the surrender of the city to Parma in 1585. He matriculated at Leiden University to study theology and mathematics and he developed into one of the first defenders of the heliocentric system in the Netherlands, believing, like Simon Stevin, that Copernicus's theories were physically true. Till 1613 he was a minister at Goes, in that year he settled as a private citizen in Middelburg. Lansbergius was in contact with many famous men such as Galilei, Chr. Huygens, Hortensius and Keppler, who often made use of Lansbergius's Tabulae. Jacob Cats, Daniel Heinsius and Johannes de Brune and others wrote dedicatory poems for his works. Ad 2: Reissue of the work by Jacob Mogge, mathematician and a surveyor from the Dutch province Zeeland, titled ''Inleydinge der Sonne-Wysers (Middelburg, Zacharias Roman, 1666). This work starts with a general introduction on geometry and astronomy and continues with a description of sundials on flat surfaces. Good copies.- (Spine repaired, binding soiled,; top corner of title of first work restored, back-hinge partly loose; some insign. staining throughout).
