The springs of Cleves as pictured by Jan de Beijer and sung by the Dutch poet Pieter Langendyk
LANGENDIJK, Pieter.De stad Kleef, haar gezondheidbron, en omleggende landsdouwen, in kunstprenten verbeeld. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Haarlem, Jan Bosch, 1747. 4to. Contemporary half calf with remains of gilt title label on spine. Title vignette with the Iron man and the amphitheatre in Cleve, and 5 folding and 5 double-page plates, engraved by H. Spilman after Johannes de Beyer. (2), 63, (3) pp. Fine original edition of this extensive and lavishly illustrated description of the city of Cleves and its medicinal springs by one of the most important and most famous 18th-century Dutch playwrights and poets, Pieter Langendyk (1683-1756). Around 1744 Langendyk visited the city of Cleves and its medicinal springs trying to improve his declining health, especially his sense of sight. The long poem is heavily annotated, providing a 'real' description of the city, based on the works on Cleves available to Langendyk at the time. The well-known draughtsman Jan de Beijer (1703-ca.1770) has lived for a long time in the lower Rhine area, especially in Cleves and Emmerik. Many of his drawings of the area are dated between 1732 and 1746; all the drawings of Cleves and surroundings, represented in the present book, are dated '1745'. Hendrikus Spilman (1721-1784) has engraved the plates after these drawings in 1746. The plates - all in very fresh and clear impressions - include a magnificent general view on Cleves, the castle, the 'Butterberg' with the amphitheatre and the statue of the Iron man, the Eltenberg, the medicinal springs, and the castle of Moyland in de surroundings of Cleves. Fine uncut copy on large paper.
