A curious book by an Italian excentric
[LANDI, Ortensio].Questions diverses, et responces d'icelles. Divisees en trois livres assçavoir, questions d'amour, questions naturelles, questions morales & politiques. Nouvellement traduites de Tuscan en Françoys. ![]() ![]() ![]() Paris, Nicolas Bonsons, 1576. 16mo. 19th century orange morocco, spine ribbed and gilt, large gilt centreornaments on both covers, richly gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, g.e., with matching slipcase, covered with marbled paper. With woodcut printer's device on title, and several woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. 178 lvs. Extremely rare edition of this collection of questions and answers about nature, morality, politics and love. The first three books were first published in Venice in 1552, and the fourth was published for the first time in the second edition of 1556. In 1558 the first French translation of the work was published in Lyon, where it was also reprinted several times. This Parisian edition seems to be especially rare, as it is only cited by Gay. Ortensio Landi, or Lando (early 16th century - ca. 1560) studied arts in Milan and medicine in Bologne. Because of his temper and his unorthodoxy regarding religion, he had several enemies who made him leave Italy in 1534. He left for Lyon, where he met and worked with the famous Etienne Dolet. After a few years he returned to his native country, where he was protected by Pico della Mirandola, Carraciolo, bishop of Catanea, and Madruni bishop of Trento. His inquiet nature and his longing for freedom however, made him leave Italy again, this time to Switzerland. In 1548 he lived at the court of François Ier for a few months, who then stayed in Lyon. The next year he returned to Italy again, and was welcomed in Brescia by the governor of the city, Antonio da Mula. In 1545 he visited several parts of Italie, assisted at the outset of the Council of Trento, and finally settled in Venice, where he spent the rest of his life. His works often contain comments on the morality and customs of the time, innovative philosophical and literary ideas, and sometimes even overt attacks on the prevailing religious ideas of his time. Very nice copy with the book plate of D. Labouly (20th century).
Gay Lemonnyer III, 911; neither in NUC, Adams, nor STC Italy.
