The Dutch East Indies described by a Frenchman

LANDES, Charles-Célestin-Anthony.

Large 4to. Contemporary half calf, spine ribbed and richly gilt with red and black morocco title-labels, gilt upper edges. (4), 108; (4), 50 (last blank); (4), 60 (51-110) pp.

Very rare copy of a work which contains 3 handwritten accounts by Anthony Landes, a Frenchman which was at that time the director of the college of interpreters in Saigon, Indo-China (Vietnam). It is however not an original manuscript but a reproduction of the original that looks like a photocopy.
The first dossier is a lecture on the Dutch East Indies. It contains chapters about each of the islands that belong to the archipel: Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Celebes, the Moluccas, New Guinea and some other small islands. Of each of these islands an extensive description of the people, the government, the products etc. is given. Furthermore it contains chapters about the general geography, climate, the physical constitution, the natural products, minerals and fauna. The second and third paper contain a Chinese short story that is translated into French by Landes.
Charles-Celestin-Anthony Landes (1850-1893) was an expert on Indo-China, especially on the local traditions of tales and legends.

Nice copy.
Not in NUC, nor in the Bibliothèque Nationale France.
