First Dutch edition of Lancaster's new method of primary teaching
LANCASTER, Joseph.Een eenig Schoolmeester onder Duizend Kinderen in eene School. Eene bijdrage tot verbetering der leerwijze en school-orde in de lagere volks-scholen. ![]() ![]() Haarlem, A. Loosjes Pz., 1811. Contemp. boards. (10), 204 pp. First Dutch edition of Lancaster's new method of primary teaching, first published in London in 1805. But the Dutch translation, by Jan van Hulst, a Mennonite teacher from Norden, was not made from the English original, which was called "Improvements in Education" and published in London in 1803, but from the German translation, called "Der einzige Schulmeister unter 1000 Kinder" by B.C.L. Natorp. The system was developed by two school teachers, Bell and Lancaster, quite independently from each other. Joseph Lancaster (1778-1838), was a quaker and taught at a school for the poor in London since 1798. He introduced a system of teaching by which older students supervised a group of eight or ten younger students, at first just because of a shortage of means to hire more teachers. All that the one teacher now had to do was organize and controll the groups and distribute the tasks. The groups were motivated and disciplined by adding a strong element of competition between the different groups as well as inside each group. Andrew Bell (1753-1832), developed a similar system as school inspector in Madras, India. He brought it back with him to England in 1811, where he met with Lancaster, and founded a "National Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church throughout England and Wales". This system, under the name of "Bell-Lancaster method", became very popular in England, France, etc., and especially in the United States of America, as Lancaster emigrated in 1813 to America where he founded the "British and Foreign School Society". Lancaster, as the German and Dutch titles implied, went so far as to think that by using this method, one teacher sufficed for one thousand children! Good copy.
Saalmink p. 1085 lists four copies; cf. Lex. der Pädagogik I, 141; Buisson, Nouv. Dict. de Pédag. pp. 945-948 (Lancaster), and pp. 174-177 (Bell).
