The fine art of persuasion
[LAMY, Bernard].De L'Art de Parler. ![]() Paris, André Pralard, 1676. 12mo. Contemp. vellum. (12), 336, (10) pp. Second edition, first published in 1675, of a completely new treatment of the art of speaking or rhetorics by Bernard Lamy (1640-1715), French philosopher and member of the Order of the Oratorians. Abandoning the old methods, the present schoolbook teaches the art of speaking by analysing language and teaching language itself, its grammar, syntax, figures of speech, and style which according to the author should correspond to one's own personality. At the end a discussion is added on the art of persuasion. Lamy teached grammar, rhetorics and philosophy at the Collèges of Mans, Angers and Grenoble. He was one of the first followers of Descartes when Thomists still held the day, and for which he was denounced by the Rector of the University in Angers, creating quite a stir in this small town. After his present first publication a large number of esteemed works followed, a.o. on sciences which greatly influenced Rousseau. His "Art de Parler" was much republished and translated into German, English and Italian. Good copy, with the bookplate of Caietanus Quercus.- (Small stamp on title; occasionally sl. waterst.).
Not in Gumuchian; Brunet III, 804; cf. Riemens 73a (ed. by Elzevier in 1676 and 1679, and an ed. at The Hague in 1685, all in French); not in NUC.
