The cymbal in classical antiquity
LAMPE, Frederick Adolf.De cymbalis veterum, libri tres, in quibus quaecumque ad eorum nomina, differentiam, originem, historiam, ministros, ritus pertinent, elucidantur. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Utrecht, Guilielmus a Poolsum, 1703. 12mo. Contemporary vellum. With ornamental woodcut vignette on title, engraved allegorical frontispiece by Blois after Hoet, and 10 full-page engraved plates of cymbals and male and female cymbal players. (28), 405, (43) pp. First edition published in the Netherlands of an exemplary humanist study on the cymbal in classical antiquity by Frederick Adolf Lampe (1683-1729), originally published at Bremen in 1700. Born at Dethmold in Germany as the son of a Minister of the Church, Lampe first studied at the Latin School in Bremen and then went for further studies to Franeker. In 1703 he returned to Bremen and a few years later he became Minister of the Church in Rees in the Land of Cleve. In about 1719 he was appointed professor at the Royal Prussian Academy in Frankfurt, but he reclined in favour of the Utrecht University, where he succeeded Franciscus Burmannus as professor of theology. Lampe wrote a large numbers of books and pamphlets, mainly on theology. The present scholarly study, written when he was only 17, is dedicated to Cornelius Hasaeus, rector of the Latin School at Bremen, and in the preliminaries there is a laudatory poem to the young author by Theodorus de Hase, his study friend and son of Cornelius. The book itself is divided into three parts, the first treating the name and origin of the cymbal, one of the oldest musical instruments. The second part is devoted to researches into the materials and forms of the cymbal through classical history, and the third part investigates the use of the instrument in rites and plays. The book is nicely illustrated with pictures of ancient instruments and portraits of classical cymbal players. Good copy.
