The French army as studied by the Russian Czar
LALAISSE, Hyppolite.Collection complète des uniformes de l'armée et de la marine Françaises.      Paris, Hautecoeur-Martinet, (1840-1848). 7 parts in 1 vol. 4to. Contemporary half calf case with gilt calf title label on front cover, 3 cloth ties and cloth wrappers on inside. Black lithographed frontispiece and 124 handcoloured lithographs of military uniforms. 125 leaves. Beautiful series of 124 numbered, hand-coloured lithographs by Hyppolite Lalaisse (1812-1884) from the library of the Czar of Russia. Each lithograph representing a uniform of the French marine or army. The frontispiece in black depicts 4 children in miltary uniforms of which one is writing the title on a wall. This series, one of the most important by Lalaisse, is even more interesting because of de military costumes it contains of the last years of the government by Louis-Philippe (1840-1848). Our copy has an ex-libris of the Imperial Library of Russia as well as two stamps with "à S. M. l'Empereur" (one on nr. 119). Fine complete set.
