Celebrated theoretical manual on the art of painting by the famous Dutch artist Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711). In the present edition, a self-portrait of De Lairesse is added. Usually such a portrait is not called for since the author was several times depicted on the richly designed frontispiece. In the foreground he is shown as a blind man, his hand guided by a naked woman while a classical clad woman holds the canvas. In the background the artist is seen behind a partly opened curtain as a young man painting. On top of the frontispiece De Lairesse is shown in a medaillon surrounded by the artist's tools as painter laureate.
The Groot Schilderboek is a clear, practical and beautiful illustrated work for people who want to learn everything about drawing in perspective and much more. Divided in 13 books over 2 volumes, the work treats all aspects of the art of painting. The first 5 books are devoted to the technique of the art, respectively the stroke of the brush, the composition, the classical and modern theory, chromatics, and the rules of clair obscur. Then the various genres are treated, in book 6 and 7 the painting of landscapes and portraits, while in book 8 classical architecture in connection with painting is discussed. Book 9 to 12 respectively are devoted to ceiling-painting, sculpture, still-life painting, and the flower-piece. The 13th and last book then treats the art of engraving.
The second work is a beautiful edition of a practical manual teaching the art of drawing, also by De Lairesse. The book is divided into two parts, the first part teaching young children in 12 lessons the principles of drawing based on geometry, while in the second part a more advanced course is given in ten so-called 'propositions' for professional students. Gerard de Lairesse, also called the Dutch Poussin, devoted himself to teaching after he became blind in 1690. Being a classicist his theories were mainly based on Junius De Pictura Veterum and on Charles Dufresnoy's De arte graphica, but the practical side of his teaching, based on his own lifelong experience, renders his books their special interest and importance. De Lairesse's teachings strongly influenced 18th century thought on art, and especially in the Netherlands they also set the tone for the engraved book-illustration of the period.
