Philips after his self portrait. The author is also several times depicted on the richly designed frontispiece: in the foreground he is shown as a blind man (De Laraisse became blind), his hand guided by a naked woman; in the background the artist is seen as a young man painting, and on top De Lairesse is shown in a medallion as painter-laureate. The Groot Schilderboek is a clear, practical and beautiful illustrated work for students who want to learn everything about painting, drawing in perspective and engraving. Divided in 13 books over 2 parts, the work treats all aspects of the art of painting. The first 5 books are devoted to the technique of the art, respectively the stroke of the brush, the composition, the classical and modern theory, chromatics, and the rules of clair-obscur. Then the various genres are treated, in book 6 and 7 the painting of landscapes and portraits, while in book 8 classical architecture in connection with painting is discussed. Book 9 to 12 respectively are devoted to ceiling-painting, sculpture, still-life and flower painting. The 13th and last book treats the art of engraving. The first edition appeared in 1707 and a second in 1716. Binding The fine and dated 19th-century prize binding is probably made by a successor of the 'Drawing Academy Bindery', active in Middelburg from 1787 to 1807. The Teeken Academie (Drawing Academy) was established in 1778 under the motto 'Vernuft en vlijt' (Genius and Diligence) as a continuation of the weekly gatherings of a few life-drawing enthusiasts that had begun the previous year. It soon began providing people, mainly amateurs, with opportunities to develop their skills. The club offered a drawing course and training in architecture, where painters for the local wallpaper factories were trained as well as architects for urban development. In 1784 the club was renamed the Drawing Academy, and in 1787 the courses were set up in the 'Musaeum Medioburgense' where Johan Adriaen van de Perre brought together a variety of institutes having to do with arts and science. In 1868 the existence of the Drawing Academy as an autonomous institute came to an end. Each year, the board of the Academy handed out silver medals or suitable books to the best students. Up until 1786, the books were covered jn red morocco with small green inlays and rich gold tooling. Afterwards the bindings were executed in calf with somewhat plainer tooling; they were made by a workshop that is know primarily for this work and which has been called the Drawing Academy Bindery. As far as is known, this bindery carried out this work between 1789 and 1807, to be followed by this nineteenth-century successor (Storm van Leeuwen). The Academy presented the students with suitable and important books as very welcome additions to their shelves, such as Willem Goeree's Algemeene bouwkunde, Samuel van Hoogstraten's Hooge Schoole der Schilderkonst and Gerard de Lairesse's Groot schilderboeck. Fine copy.- (Stain on p. 257 of part 2; re-backed).
