First Dutch edition of an important work on North American Indians first published in French as Moeurs des sauvages americain (1724). Joseph François Lafitau (or Lafiteau), a son of a rich merchant, travelled as a missionary to Canada in 1711. He made "a thorough study of Iroquois character and usages, as a preparation for his great work Moers des sauvages ...", as Howgego notes. The many detailed illustrations form an important record of Iroquois culture.

Corners slightly bumped, split at the top of spine. Good copy with the bookplate of C. Carsten.
European Americana VI, 731/128; Howes L22; Muller, America 863; Sabin 38598; Tiele, Bibl. 637; cf. Howgego, to 1800, L51.
