Classic work on garden architecture
Modern half calf, gilt spine with red title label lettered in gold. Engraved title, numerous illustrations of garden architecture, garden furniture, and plans of gardens on 190 numbered full-page engraved plates. (4), IV, 120 (=118), VIII pp. First issue of the second edition of this magnificent classic work on garden architecture by Gijsbert van Laar (1767-1829), presenting an encyclopaedic pictorial survey of all possible garden houses, ruins, sculpture, gates and bridges, garden furniture and decorations, including many early romantic ('English') garden plans, which came in use in Europe in the early 19th century. The book was first published at J. Allart in Amsterdam in 24 instalments between 1802 and 1809. Van Laar dedicated his work to his friend Dirk Wynandsz. Ditmarsch, who was the mayor of Broek in Waterland (dedication leaf often lacking, but present here). The introduction is dated 20 November 1807 (here the printed 1802 is corrected with ink in 1807) at Alkmaar, where Van Laar in 1799 had established a tree- and garden nursery. The text with detailed explanations of the 190 plates, is bound per quire before or after the corresponding plates. There is some confusion about the following editions or issues in which the plates are always the same but the text differs. Following Van den Broek & Meulekamp, the first issue of the second edition, our copy, in which the text is newly set on 120 pp., was printed in 1819 in Amsterdam by Jacobus de Ruyter. The Zaltbommel edition published by Johannes Noman and Zoon, (1819 (or 1831?) with 190 plates and (4), IV, 100 pp. would be the second issue of the second (or rather the first) edition, issued in 1819 (?). The third and final edition was also printed in Zaltbommel, also at Noman's in 1831 (Saakes, 9 (1832), p. 334). Van Laar based some of the designs on those in J. G. Grohmann's 'Ideenmagazin fur Liebhaber von Garten', which began publication in Leipzig in 1796, and John Plaw's English modelbook 'Ferme ornée; or rural improvements'' (London, 1795), but most of the material is completely new. With the often lacking 8 pp. 'Generaal register' (index) at the end. Fine copy on large paper, interleaved with blank pages.- (Binding restored; ms. ownership's entry on title; without leaf D4 but text is complete!; tear in one leaf).
