Later light brown chequered calf, spine ribbed and gilt in compartments, blind and black fillet borders around a large gilt central ornament on both sides, red painted edges, marbled endpapers. With engraved frontispiece, title in red & black, 6 interesting engraved headpieces and engraved initials, one to each part (the first with a portrait of the author in a roundel), engraved plate with coat of arms of the dedicatee 'Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Marggraffen zu Brandenburg', and 61 engraved plates, (9 double page, 52 full page). [28], 66; 96; 114; 136; 144; 104, [8 (of 10, last leaf of index missing)] pp. Third revised, adapted and much enlarged edition of this very extensive work on horses and horsemanship by Georg Engelhard Löhneisen (1552-1622), a noble equerry in the service of various margraves of Braunschweig, Wolffenbüttel and Brandenburg. The work deals with every thinkable aspect concerning horses and horse riding. The training of horses is described as well as the anatomy and diseases of horses and their cures, their careful treatment, details of equipment necessary for horse riding, sports and games on horseback, breeding of horses, etc.: all the aspects of the horse and horse riding as should be known to soldiers, nobility and other horse lovers. The first edition of this work was published 120 years earlier, in 1609 at the author's estate near Remlingen, the birthplace of Löhneisen, where he had established his private printing office. The title was Grundlicher und ausführlicher Bericht von Allem, was zu der löblichen Reuterey gehörig …; a second edition appeared in 1624, also in Remlingen. Due to the long period between the first and our edition, it was necessary to adapt and rework the language and contents in order to give an updated and more modern description, enlarged with extensive notes by the editor, Valentin Trichter. The magnificent plates for this edition were newly designed and engraved by the brothers Andreas and Engelhard (d. 1733) Nunzer from Nürnberg (Thieme & Becker 25, p. 538). They depict the anatomy, treatment, and training of horses in great detail, giving for example details of saddles, bits and bridles, many training exercises - often indicating the movements -, the various breeds of horses, and the games, sports and tournaments for cavalry horses. Lipperheide as well as the Berlin Katalog call for 62 plates, containing figs. 1-80, assuming apparently that in the series of plates on the various breeds of horses in part 3 (pp. 36-55) there ought to be 7 plates with the figs. 1-14. There is no plate, however, with the figs. 3-4. But this apparently was what the editor had planned. There is no reference in the text to these figs. as is the case with all the others. Moreover there is a general confusion in the numbering of the figures: they run as follow: 50, 1-2, 5-23, 74, 79, 48, 25-47, 49-55, 57-73, 75-78, 80. Checking another copy we didn't find the plate either. So the series of 61 plates in our copy is certainly complete. Lower corner of half title restored, a few pp. a bit soiled; spine damaged at top. Very nice copy.
