Amsterdam, Cornelis Dankerts, ca. 1690. Large folio. Three-quarter modern brown morocco, marbled boards. 8 double-page engraved plates (ca. 300 x 350mm) by Bastiaan Stopendaal after the designs of Herbert Kramer (Cramer) of views and plans of the house designed for Pieter Reael and his wife Maria Eleonora Huydekoper. Half-page engraved coats-of-arms of Pieter Reael and his wife, on the verso of the first leaf. One lv and 8 double-page engraved plates.

Extremely rare print suite, containing 8 very interesting plates of the manor house that Pieter Reael, Lord of Nigtevecht, had built after his marriage (1683) with Maria Eleonora Huydecoper, the daughter of the famous magistrate, burgomaster of Amsterdam and humanist Mr. Balthasar Huydecoper, who himself had also a house (Goudesteyn) on the river Vecht at Maarssen (still existing).
The recto of the single leaf preceding the plates acts as title-page, but contains (1) the dedication to Pieter Reael and his wife, signed by the architect Herbert Cramer, "Stads Mr. metselaar en keurmeester van de gebakken steen over Amsterdam" (Stone mason of Amsterdam and inspector of brick of that city), and (2) the impressum: "Tot Amsterdam, by Cornelis Dankerts, voor aan op de Nieuwedyck, in den Atlas, werden dese en alderhande soorten van architectuur en teeken boeken verkoft."
On the verso, under the engraved coats-of-arms, there is a note telling something of the history of the house. Pieter Reael's father, Henricus (1621-1656), who was married with Sara Hinlopen (1623-1687). has bought an island in the river Vecht in 1633, later called the 'Reaelen-eiland' (Island of the family Reael). On 8 April 1687 the first stone was laid and the building was finished already on the 21st of August of the same year! The island in the river Vecht is situated between Overmeer and Vreeland and is surrounded by land very pleasantly planted with oak and walnut trees.
The plates, all signed by Bastiaan Stopendaal, after the designs by Herbert Kramer, show (1) the front of the house, (2) the back, (3) the side, (4) the general plan, (5) first floor, (6) second floor, (7) third floor, and (8) the roof.
Bastiaan Stopendaal (ca. 1637-1693) engraved many more architectural plates, but these plates are only mentioned in the book by Munnigh Schmidt & Lisman, who reproduced 2 of them (cf. Thieme-Becker 32, p. 117; Waller, p. 315).
The manor house, called 'De Nes', or 'Huis te Nigtevegt', was the first house built in the Netherlands with a lage octagonal hall looking on to the garden, showing strong French influences. Apart from this hall the house fits perfectly in the tradition of seventeenth century Dutch manor house architecture and comes close to the famous houses 'Oud-Poelgfeest' (1667) near Leiden and 'Trompenburg (ca. 1675) in 's-Graveland. In the Zegepraalende Vecht of 1719 there is an engraving with a view on the house by Daniel Stoopendaal, showing also the lifting bridge which was the only way one could approach the island. The island remained in the family's possession until the mid nineteenth century and was demolished soon after.

Very fine copy of this extremely rare suite.- (Some insignificant browning in some of the folds).
