The 12 issues of the first two volumes (1853 and 1854) of this extremely rare monthly periodical on the worldwide missions of the Moravian (Herrnhut) Brotherhood, or 'L'église de l'Unité des frères de Bohème et de Morave'.
Each volume consists of 12 issues published on the 15th of each month. There are contributions on the mission in China, Persia, Turkey, Madagascar, India, Australia, New Guinea, Polynesia, Africa, Delaware, Surinam, Greenland, etc. The journal contains also anthropological interesting articles on cannibalism, the zealotry of the Hindus, etc. There is also a section with the correspondence of the various missionaries. The illustrations depict a.o. inhabitants of New Guinea and Australia, Friedensthal on the isle of St. Croix in the Danish Antilles, the island 'des Phoques' in Africa, the city of Saron on Barbados, Jerusalem, Paramaribo and the plantation 'Rust-en-werk' both in Surinam, where the Dutch Herrnhutters were active.
The Brotherhood of the Herrnhutters, or the 'Eglise de l'unité des frères de Bohème et Morave', was founded by Nikolas Ludwig Graf von Zinzendorff (1700-1760) and was based on German pietistic and Hussite ideas and beliefs.
