With a description of the Russian settlement in California
KOTZEBUE, Otto von.Neue Reise um die Welt, in den Jahren 1823, 24, 25 und 26. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Weimar, Wilhelm Hoffmann, 1830. 2 volumes bound as 1. 8vo. Contemporary cloth. With 2 hand-coloured etched frontispieces, folding engraved chart of the Bay Mattaway near Tahiti, and 2 large folding engraved charts of groups of islands in the Pacific. XXII, 191; 176; 177, 34 pp. First, much enlarged German edition of the new voyage around the world by the Russian explorer Otto von Kotzebue, originally published in Russia in 1828, and dedicated to Von Krusenstern. As explained in the preface the intention of the voyage had originally been purely scientific exploration, but later the ship was asked to take reinforcements to Kamchatka, and to keep watch for a full year at the Northwest coast of America to keep outsiders out of the area of the Russian American Trading Company. After that the ship was free for further exploration. To this purpose a number of scientists had boarded the ship, like the physicist Lenz, the naturalist Johann F. Eschscholtz, the astronomer Preuss, and the mineraloger Hoffmann. The expedition sailed first to Brazil, then went by way of Cape Horn to Chile, Tahiti, Pitcarn Island, Tonga, Navigator's Islands, Radack and back to Kamchatka. Visited were also California with its new Russian settlement, the Marianas and the Philippines. By this voyage of exploration the main features of the Northwest coastline were fairly well established, so it could be called a success. Binding slighty damaged and discoloured. Good copy.
Borba de Moraes, p. 440; Hill 946; Judd 16; Kroepelien 674; Sabin 38286.
