The tricks of Jean Joseph Pinetti Willedale de Merci explained

KOSMANN, Johann Wilhelm.
Nieuw Natuurlyk Toverboek, of alle de Kunststukken van den Ridder Pinetti de Mercy, tot navolging gemaklyk gemaakt en uitgelegd.

Amsterdam, G. Roos, 1817. 8vo. Modern wrappers, uncut. (12), 155 pp.

Second issue in Dutch of the description and explanation of some seventy conjuring acts performed by the famous magician Jean Joseph Pinetti Willedale de Merci. The author, professor of mathematics at a Military Academy, based the explanations of the tricks on Pinetti's own "Amusemens Physiques", published at Paris in 1784 and 1789, including some based on the explanations given by Decremps in "Magie Blanche devoilée", also published at Paris in 1789. All tricks are exactly described and explained as how they were done, often including the voluntary help of persons chosen from the public.
Kosman's book was first published in German at Berlin in 1799, and according to the author he had refrained from publishing the book until Pinetti had finished his shows at Berlin. Still, the book had raised Pinetti's anger and he took the matter to court, accusing the author of insult. In an afterword the author excuses himself on the fact that as a tutor of young officers he was obliged to teach these young people how to recognize and understand when being fooled. He also promises to make the progress and the outcome of his trial public.
The present Dutch edition seems to be extremely rare, not listed in any of the Dutch public libraries.

Good copy.
Not in Saalmink; cf. Cat. Van Rijn 1184 (other title on Pinetti's conjuring tricks).
