A ferocious attack on Descartes by a follower of Voetius
KOELMAN, Jacobus.Het vergift van de Cartesiaansche philosophie grondig ontdekt. En meest historischer wijze, uit de schriften van des Cartes zelfs, en van andere schrijvers, zo voor als tegen hem, getrouwelijk aangeweezen. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Amsterdam, Johannes Boekholt, 1692. 8vo. Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in ink. (32), 669, (34) pp. Original edition of this vehement attack on Cartesian thought by the strict Calvinist Dutch minister Jacobus Koelman (1632-1692), who, as a fierce student and follower of the Utrecht Professor Gisbertus Voetius, waged war against everybody and everything that was not stricktly in tune with the Calvinist principles and doctrines: as the followers of Coccejus, De Labadie, Bathasar Bekker and also Descartes, the 'BĂȘte noir' of Voetius. But his work was so solid and thorough that Thijssen- Schoute made ample use of it in her classic history of the influence of Descartes in the Netherlands. Good copy.- (Old owner's ms. entry of Nicolas Pos on title).
