(2), 11, (3) pp. Extremely rare complete set of the church history of the Duchy of Gelre, with its very rare continuation spanning the historical period from early times until 1805. The first work in its first edition is written by Johannes Knippenbergh (1662-1742), a Catholic priest at Helden, and treats the history of the Catholic Church at Gelre and the bishopry of Roermond upto 1700. The book is dedicated to the Bishop of Roermond and includes his large and rare portrait in aquatint, which is mostly lacking. The preface is dated November 1718, and an extensive index is present as well. For the earliest history Knippenbergh used the classic history of Gelderland by Pontanus, from 1639, continued by Sligtenhorst in 1654 with his "Geldersche Geschiedenissen", also a classic in its field. The book is well produced, printed in Roman type in two columns with legenda in smaller type in the margins, and nicely adorned with elegant woodcut vignettes throughout. Ad 2: The extremely rare continuation starts at 1701 and brings the church history up to about 1805. According to a manuscript note on title the authors were Goyers, Canon at Anderlecht, and Van Helmont, Canon at Malines. Of interest is also the added necrology of the bishop of Roermond, who died in 1824, to which is added the letter by Pope Leo XII written in November 1823 to console the bishop, then mortally ill. Good set, part I from the Library of the Mission Brothers Lazaristen at Nijmegen.- (Binding rubbed, spine dam., recased with new endpapers; library stamp on title).
