In his preface the author explains that he had found among his late father's possessions the ring of Gyges which made the person wearing the ring invisible. After testing the ring and discovering that it really worked, he decided to use the ring to study people's characters. The author travelled all over the country and made himself invisible whenever he met interesting characters, and unseen himself recorded their conversations.
