Paris, Sebastien Cramoisy, 1629. 8vo. 19th century half calf, spine ribbed and gilt. Woodcut vignette on title. (4), 102 pp.

Rare work with extracts of letters written to the general of the Jesuit Society, Mutio Viteleschi. Due to his support for the Jesuit missions in the far East, it was during his term that the Jesuits had their golden years in China. The letters were written by a Jesuit and they relate of what happened in China at the Jesuit missions in the year 1624. The author is most problably Wencelas Pantaléon Kirwitzer (d. 1626), of whom it is known that he signed his letters with his two first names, which is also the case in this work , where on the last page the last letter is signed: "De Macao ce vingt-septiesme octobre mille six cens vingt-cinq...Indigne fils en Iesus-Christ Vencislas Pantaleon."
Kirwitzer joined the Jesuit order in 1606 and after his studies in mathematics, he left for China in 1618 where he died in Macao in 1626. The first two chapters or letters give a general view of the politicial situation in China and of the circumstances of the Christian religion in China at that time. The other letters give accounts of the situations in the different settlements of the missionaries throughout China. The work has also been attributed to P. Darde or to P.J.B. de Machault, because of the similarities in the titles, publisher and publication-dates of some of the works by those Jesuits, who also resided in China in the same time.

Good copy with ms. name and annotation on last page 'a la plus grande gloire de dieu acheve de lire le 6me may 1708 J. Prevost'.
