Amsterdam, Jacob Lescaille, 1661. 4to. 19th-century brown paper wrappers. Woodcut printer's device ('Perseveranter') on title-page, woodcut initial. (16) pp.

One of only 2 plays written by the Amsterdam actor Jacobus Kemp and the only one to be published during his lifetime. The play is based on Jacob Cats' Vryster, a story published in Houwelick (1625, vol. II, p.53ff). It is about a student deceiving a girl and her father by putting the words 'vi coactus' (violently forced) under a promise to marry her, rendering the document worthless. The story is especially nice because of the conversations between the students Karel (the culprit) and Nicolaes, who are both very drunk from too much wine, at the beginning of the story.

Good copy.- (Tiny hole in tile-page; sl. dogeared).
