Cologne, Goswinus Cholinus, 1588. 8vo. Contemporary limp overlapping vellum with title in ink on spine, traces of ties. Woodcut printer's device on title, 10 half-page woodcuts of a seal and costumes in text, woodcut head- and end-pieces, woodcut initials. (24), 342, (6, 4 blank) pp.

Rare original and only edition of the oldest printed source concerning the history of Friesland by Cornelus Kemp (Dokkum ca. 1516- Groningen 1587). The description of the city of Leeuwarden (starting on p. 122) is according to Eekhoff written in 1574. The ten woodcuts show men and women in regional costumes respectively both sides of a seal. The preliminary pages contain a.o. an extensive dedication to the city of Groningen dated October 21, 1568, a message to the reader and two laudatory poems by Antonius Follardi respectively Ennius Elchius. The first book is on the origin of Friesland and its old inhabitants, book 2 contains the description of the province, and book 3 the early history of Friesland until 850, containing many fables and rather implausible stories.
Cornelis Kemp already went at an early age to Cologne. There studied Literature, Philosophy and Law. He came back to The Netherlands in 1540, where he first lived in Dokkum and later in Groningen. He died around 1587.

Good copy, including last blanks.- (Binding rest. with some old wormholes in back cover, fragments of a 15th-century Latin Bible MS as spine support, sl. foxed throughout).
