The most important author on Surinam of the mid-nineteenth century

KAPPLER, August.
Sechs Jahre in Surinam oder Bilder aus dem Militärischen Leben dieser Colonie, und Skizzen zur Kenntniss seiner Socialen und Naturwissenschaftlichen Verhältnisse.

Stuttgart, E. Schweizerbart, 1854. 8vo. Original half calf. VI, 282 pp.

First edition of this interesting travel book by the most important author on Surinam of the mid-nineteenth century. August Kappler (1815-1887), a German  merchant deeply interested in natural history and yearning for adventure, decided in 1835 to sign up with the Dutch army to go to Surinam. In the  present work, he gives a detailed description of his voyage and of all aspects of Surinam life. A Dutch translation appeared in the same year in Utrecht.
After 6 years, he returned to Europe, but he lost his collection  of Surinam insects, sent with another ship, in a shipwreck. Still, he  brought several important collections of Surinam plants and insects to  Holland and Germany to sell them at good prices. Kappler returned to Surinam and founded the place Albina as a trading post for wood and cocoa. After his death he was buried with the Dutch flag as a token of gratitude for his involvements with this Dutch colony.

Good copy, from the library of the Princess Von der Leyen, with her library-stamp on title.
