Interesting French observations on English morals
Sm.8vo Contemp. half morocco. With large folding engraved plan of London with 3 small views at either side by A. Tardieu, 3 engraved frontispieces by Johannot, Roger and Burdet, and numerous wood-engraved vignettes in text of scenes of English live and costumes. 354; 344; 344 pp. Very interesting observations on English live and morals and one of the rarer "Spectatorian" writings by the French journalist and playwright Étienne de Jouy. Jouy had led a rather adventurous life and had worked with the English for two years, before the Revolution, in Bengalen, and later he married an English girl, a niece of Lord Malmesbury, which by the way brought him into trouble during the Revolution. Born in 1764 Jouy was active in two quite different historical times, of the 18th century of the Enlightment and Voltaire, whom was worshipped by Jouy his entire live, and of the Great Revolution, which he served in the army, but which also he had to flee several times. In fact, Jouy was much relieved by the Restauration of the Bourbons. In his present observations Jouy touched all aspects of English society, including children's education, and activities of youth. Good set.- (Top of one spine sl. dam.; occasionally sl. foxed).
