The first book entirely devoted to carpentry
JOUSSE, Mathurin.Le theatre de l'art de c(h)arpentier enrichi de diverses figures avec linterpretation dicelles faict & dresse par Mathurin Jousse. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fleche, Georges Griveau, 1627. Folio. 19th-century green three-quarter morocco, spine lettered and ornamented in gold, boards covered with marbled paper, marbled endpapers. Richly engraved title in a triumphal arch and 125 mostly full-page, several double-page, woodcut perspectival model drawings for carpenters for a wide variety of wooden constructions, from timber-frames for all sorts of buildings, roofs, towers, fortreese, barns, bridges, theatres, etc. to staircases, balconies, pidgeon coops, etc. in the main work; and five large half-page woodcuts of exemplary model drawings of the five architectural orders with proportional measures at either side, and 2 general perspectival model designs on 2 full-page woodcut plates in the added treatise; many interesting woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces. (4), 176, 14 pp. Rare original edition of a very important and most richly illustrated model book for use of carpenters, depicting and describing no less than 125 different projects by Mathurin Jousse (1607-1692). The work, in all probability, is the first book devoted entirely to carpentry. This first edition includes privileges for both the present work and Jousse's La fidelle ouverture de l'art de serrurer ... which was published in the same year and which was probably intended to be a companion volume. Another edition was published by Griveau in 1650, followed by further editions in 1664, 1692, 1702 and 1751. The treatise added at the end is meant for an extra general instruction on perspective and proportions of the five classical styles of the antique column. In the explanation of the plates the specific carpenters jargon is found which is partly still used and understood until the present day. Good copy.- (Stamp on title; some corrections of page-numbers in manuscript; some slight browning at places).
