Antwerpen, Jacobus van Gaesbeeck, (ca. 1750). Sm. 8vo. Contemporary calf, spine ribbed and gilt, orange title label. Engraved title-page, 14 full-page engraved plates by Frederick Bouttats, woodcut initials and endpieces. (8), 520, (8) pp.

Third edition of a curious popular love emblem book in the form of a spiritual card-game with hearts as trump cards in a "game of love". The ingenious emblematic plates were designed with much imagination by Frederick  Bouttats the Younger (ca. 1610-1676), a member of a famous family of artists and engravers, active at Antwerp in the 17th century. The first edition was published in Antwerp by Arnout van Braeckel in 1666.
The emblems depict all the cards of hearts of a regular card-game with little views and symbols shown within the hearts, while the 14th plate depicts on the one hand the bad things happening when spades are the trump cards and on the other hand the triumphant happiness of trump hearts. At the end the rules of the spiritual card-game with hearts as  trump cards are given, and warnings are added against all other, profane, card games, with examples of the terrible consequences of playing cards for profit. The author, Father Joseph of the monastry S. Barbara of the Carmelites Discals had first used the theme of the card-game of love in a sermon, delivered in 1661. The book is dedicated to Jacobus Crils, Prior of the Abbey at Tongerlo, and to Christina Crils, Prioress at Antwerp. At the  end six Approbations are present, all dated 1666.

Fine copy , with library stamp on fly leaves and ms. owners name J. de la Frosse, dated 1765.- (Wormhole in binding on spine, edges of binding sl. rubbed).
