Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine in six compartments, red morocco title-label, red edges. Engraved device on title, 6 engravings in text, 4 engraved head- and tail pieces, 121 engraving on 82 leaves. 37, (3) pp. text. With: FARINATI, Paolo. Diverses figures a l'eau forte de petits amours, anges vollants, et enfants, propre a mettre sur frontons portes et autres lieux. Paris, C.A. Jombert, 1736. 30 engravings on 15 leaves. First edition of a design book by Charles-Antoine Jombert (1712-1784). Added is a small work by Paolo Farinati (1524-1606) with all kinds of figures depicted on the engravings. The rarity is mostly due to the good quality of the plates that the book contains. On the engravings various subjects are depicted i.a. small measured images of antique sculptures with the purpose for instruction, a series of males nudes, views and a couple of heads after Raphael and other artists. Charles-Antoine Jombert was a famous 18th century engraver. In the present work he concentrated mainly on perspectives and anatomy. He was also respected for his portraits and architectural designs. Paolo Farinati (1524-1606) was a painter, engraver and architect. He was infuenced by Titian and others. Farinati often used a snail as a signature on his work, although this is not visible on the present plates. Good copy with ex-libris of Mr. Cotelle.- (Title browned; very few occ. brown stains).
