Paris, Cordier et Legras, La veuve De Vaux, An X - 1801. 12mo. Contemp. half green morocco, spine ribbed and gilt, red mottled edges. With fine engraved frontispiece showing King Lion carrying away a lamb caught by the wolf. 252 pp.

Rare first edition of a collection of newly invented fables, published by Adeline Joliveau (1756-1830), who married a French civil servant and devoted herself to teaching. The present fables were intended for the education of young girls. It was the first fable collection - apart from l'Herbier Moral by Madame de Genlis - published by a French woman. At the end of the 136 fables, divided over 6 Books, four fables are translated in Italian by Séraphin Maffei, and some miscellaneous poetry by Mrs. Joliveau is added. Written in a clear, simple and natural style, with use of delicate metaphors, and of good taste in the choice of mythologies and morals, the book is a real classic in the field of children's literature.

Fine copy, with ms. presentation by the author on verso half-title.
Quérard IV, 231 (dates it 1802); not in Gumuchian.
