With engraved frontispiece, showing the shooting of William the First at Delft, by A. van der Laan. (32), 168 pp. First Dutch edition of the work called "Panegyrical essays upon the prayer 'Lord, pity the people', the only words of William I, Prince of Orange, at his sudden and violent death, 10 July, 1584, written by J. Johnston, of Middlesex, and first published in London in 1716. James Johnston (ca. 1643-1737), was a son of Archibald Johnston, Lord Warriston, who, as a supporter of Cromwell, was executed in 1663 after the Restauration by Charles II. His family then fled to the Netherlands where James Johnston studied Law at Utrecht. Henry Sidney, Lord Romney, engaged him in the service of William of Orange to prepare William's accession to the English throne. But being an extreme presbyterian Johnston's sympathies in the end were with the people and the Commons of Scotland. After his retirement from politics he earned some fame for his gardening and his vines at his House at Twickenham. Fine copy from the library of D.F. Scheurleer.- (Waterstain in blank margin of frontispiece; occasional waterstaining in the blank corners of pp. 141-167; p 168 with some waterstaining in blank margin and a library stamp).
