First edition of these important documents and letters paving the way to the 'Twelve Year's Truce (1609)

(12), 757, (11) pp. First edition of the important documents and letters by Pierre Jeannin (1540-1622) on the negotiations between Spain and the Dutch Republic which would end in the 'Twelve Year's Truce' of 1609. Jeannin played his important part as the French ambassador in The Hague. The collection has been edited by the grandson of Jeannin, Nicolas de Castille, Abbé de S. Benique (+1691) who dedicated the work to Nicolas Fouquet, chevalier, vicomte de Melun, et superintendant des finances. Further editions appeared in 1659, 1682, and 1695. Pierre Jeannin was a French statesman. A pupil of the great jurist Jacques Cujas at Bourges, he was an advocate at Dijon by 1569 and became councillor and then president of the parlement of Burgundy. He unsuccessfully opposed the massacre of St Bartholomew in his province. As councillor to Charles of Lorraine, Duke of Mayenne, he sought to reconcile him with King Henry IV of France. After the victory of Fontaine-Française (1595), Henry took Jeannin into his council and in 1602 named him intendant of finances. He took part in the principal events of the reign, negotiated the Treaty of Lyon with Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy, and the defensive alliance between France and the United Netherlands in 1608. As Superintendent of Finances under King Louis XIII, be tried to establish harmony between the king and the Queen Mother, Marie de' Medici. Most of the correspondence here dates from the period 1607 to 1610, mostly written by or to Nicolas de Neuffville, Seigneur de Villeroy (1543-1617). On pp. 553-56 is a letter of January 25, 1609, from Jeannin to King Henry, relating to the search for a northern passage to the east. After the title (verso blank) and portrait (verso blank), follow the dedication (pp. (30-4)), and an 'Eloge de monsieur le pr sident Jeannin' (pp. (5-12)), pp. 1-687: Negotations; pp. 698-757: 'Oeuvres meslées' (letters and documents till 1622; p. (758): Extrait du Privilege, dated 28 August 1655, and the sentence: "Achevé d'imprimer pour la première fois le 30. May 1656"; pp. (1-11): Table. Very good copy.- (Top of spine sl. damaged).
