Exceptionally rare collection of 8 treatises on the cultivation of sugar cane, printed in Jamaica

(2), III, (1), 185, (1) pp. Extremely rare collection of eight treatises by eight different authors on the cultivation of sugar cane and its improvements. The cultivation of sugar cane was the most important branch of agricultural activities in the Caribbean at the time. The Governor-General of Jamaica, James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin and 12th Earl of Kincardine (1811-1863) had put up a reward for the best treatise on the subject. The winner would win 100 pound in prize money. The result was the production of nine essay's, of which eight are here published, the ninth was withdrawn by the author, shortly after the prize was awarded. A slip of paper pasted to the recto of the second leaf mentions the names of the contributors: - (1) Thomas Henney of St Catherines (p. 1-16; one plate and two illustrations in the text). - (2) Raynes W. Smith of St Elizabeth's (p. 17-24; one plate). - (3) (Anonymous; title: 'On preparing land by manuring', dated 4 July 1843 (p. 25-46; 2 plates). - (4) W.F. Whitehouse of St Mary's (p. 47-124). - (5) W.A. Clements of Metcalf (p. 125-52). - (6) James Sullivan of Clarendon (p. 153-68). - (7) G.W. Gordon of St Andrew's (p. 169-75). - (8) (Anonymous; title: 'On the application of labour to the cultivation of the cane, etc.' (p. 176-81; one illustration in the text). The Earl of Elgin was a British colonial administrator and diplomat, who was Governor-General of Jamaica from 1842 till 1847. He is best known as Governor-General of the Province of Canada, his next post. Good copy of a very rare Jamaica imprint.- (Some sl. foxing throughout).
