Introducing the Kindergarten
Orig. half cloth. With lithographed frontispiece showing small children playing a round-game, illustrations of homely scenes on 2 tinted lithographed plates, illustrations and figures of Fröbel's method on 78 numbered lithographed plates, 12 printed in blue, and musical scores to playing-songs on 14 pages. 210, 14 pp. First Dutch edition of Fröbel's important work on Kindergarten, fully describing his method of teaching young children by specific games and plays. It was adapted after the German by J.F. Jacobs into French, subsequently translated into Dutch, and published with an introduction by the Baroness Von Marenholz in co-operation at Brussels and Amsterdam. Next to Pestalozzi, Friedrich Wilhelm August Fröbel (1782-1852), was the greatest educational reformer since Comenius. He introduced the famous "Kindergarten" as a firm base for all education. From the age of two children are taught and generally educated by means of a great variety of games and plays, indoors as well as outdoors, here all fully described and illustrated for the teacher or the parent. The materials used are simple and inexpensive, like a ball, blocks, little sticks, plastic clay, paper, a pencil, scissors, etc. The present work is preceeded by a preface warmly recommending Fröbel's method, and a short biography. The Baroness Von Marenholz had greatly helped the "master" during his lifetime, a.o. lending Fröbel her castle at Marienthal for a school. And after his death she kept spending her energy and money to the promotion of Fröbel's work, patronizing Fröbel's method at the Education Exhibition at London in 1854, and supporting translations of Fröbel's text book into foreign languages, a.o. the present one in Dutch. Fröbel's method soon became very popular in the Netherlands and still is practiced today at special Fröbel-schools. Good copy of a rare work.- (Binding rubbed; sl. traces of use).
