The orations and letters of the famous Greek philosopher Isocrates from Athens
ISOCRATES.Orationes et epistolae. (In Greek). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Venice, Petrus Nicolinus Sabiensus for M. Sessa, 1549. 8vo. Later half calf with black title-label on spine. Woodcut printer's device on title, many woodcut initials throughout text. 276 leaves. Third Venetian edition of the orations and letters by the famous Greek philosopher Isocrates from Athens. Earlier published in 1534 and 1542. Isocrates (436-338 BC) was born in Athens to a wealthy family and he was to study both under Socrates and Plato, who mentions him in Phaedrus. He was one of the ten Attic orators and the head of a rhetoric school in Chios during the reign of the thirty tyrants in Athens. Back in Athens he wrote speeches for lawyers, and founded a school of oratory and essay writing. Famous students of his were Hyperides, Isaeus and Lycurgus. Isocrates firmly believed that the Greek city-states had to unite. In his speech Panegyricos, he stated that Athens and Sparta should unite against the Persians. When this did not happen, he looked for a strong leader from the outside, and first hoped for the tyrant Dionysius of Syracusae. Dissappointed by this ruler, Isocrates then asked Philip II of Macedonia to join. When Greece lost its independence, and Athens was sacked by the Macedonians, Isocrates starved himself to death at the age of 98. Good copy with book plate stamp in red ink on inside front cover.- (Some wormholes and waterstains in margins).
