Contemporary half brown calf, spine gilt with ornamental flowers, red morocco title label lettered in gold. With woodcut vignette on title and a large woodcut head-piece. 15, (1) pp. First edition of a treatise on three maps of Syria by Joseph-Nicolas De l' Isle (1688-1768). These maps are a follow-up of the map of ancient Palestina or the Holy Land published in 1873, and are all three also made by Joseph-Nicolas's brother Guillaume De l' Isle (1675-1726) in 1718 and published posthumous. Syria was often in war with Palestina and is therefore often reffered to in the Holy Books. To be able to fully understand those Holy Books, Joseph-Nicolas judged it important to have knowledge of Syria as well as of Palestina. The last page of the work contains the approbations. Joseph-Nicolas took service in Russia where he became friends with Peter the Great and together with Kirilov produced the first Russian atlas, Atlas Russicus, 1745. In Russia he founded the Academy of Sciences of St. Petersburg. He returned to Paris with an important map collection. Guillaume was one of the most prominent figures at the beginning of the 18th century. It is said that at the age of eight he already could draw maps, and he was regarded as an infant prodigy. In 1699 he produced a map of the world, maps of the four continents and two globes, terrestial and celestial. He was elected member of the academy in 1702 and in 1718 made "Premier Géographe du Roi". Fine copy.
