Contemporary half green morocco, spine gilt in compartments, title lettered in gold. With lithographed frontispiece of Buenos Aires signed Formentin & Cie, an engraved vignette on title with the inscription 'Viva la patria!', 3 lithographed plates, of the porteña or costume for Church, the porteña for a walk, and a gaucho enlacing an ox, and 1 folding map (460 x 380 mm) engraved on stone by L. Bouffard, Imprimerie de Benard, of Uruguay and the province of Rio Grande-do-Sul or São Pedro, including the course of the Uruguay river and the Rio de la Plata, drawn up by Levasseur under the direction of the author. (4), 618, (6) pp. Very rare first edition of a journey to Brasil and Uruguay, written by Arsène Isabelle (1806?-1879). Isabelle decided to undertake a journey around the world, and choose as a starting point the Rio de la Plata. He departed on 31 December 1929, and arrived in Buenos Aires in March 1830. Being a true businessman, he had brought with him an amount of goods with the intention to sell them at a profitable price, but did not succeed in this attempt, mainly because Buenos Aires was at that time afflicted by a revolution. He started a candle factory, which he sold after 4 years, and finally started his voyage. He travelled through Argentina, Uruguay and the province of Rio Grande del Sul and probably returned to France during the summer of 1835. He also visited the German colony of São Leopoldo in Porto Alegre and the missions of Uruguay. The work is divided into two parts, the first concentrating upon the voyage from Le Havre to America, Montevideo, la Banda oriental and Buenos Aires. The second part is concentrated upon Uruguay, São Pedro and Porto Alegre. The importance of this work lies in the fact that it is one of the few books of the time to describe the Rio Grande del Sul. The section on this region was reprinted in the Nouvelles Annales des Voyages, tome LXV (1835). A German translation was published in the Atlas of A. Lewalds (1836). The book was dedicated to "Messieurs les négocians composant le commerce du Havre". The signature of the author is added on the verso of the half title. Very good copy.- (Some foxing throughout).
