Paris, Delalain, 1773. Large 8vo Contemporary light brown morocco, spine richly gilt, with two black title-labels, with gilt borders on sides, gilt inner decoration, g.e. (P. BOZERIAN). Moreau in four states, the first a cancel, the second an 'épreuve d'artiste', the third signed by the artist and the engraver, and the fourth with all the lettering added to the plate. (4), 232, (4) pp.

Fine copy of the first edition of the newly invented fables in verse by Barthélemie Imbert (1747-1790), a very popular French poet at the time. Fables of course were of old a much practiced literary genre. The present collection is divided into five books, each book containing 20 fables, with a total of one hundred mostly animal fables. Ours is part of a variant issue, without the dedication to Madame la Dauphine on title, and published at Paris only, instead of mentioning a joint publisher's address at Paris and Amsterdam.
The book starts with a dedicatory verse to La Fontaine. And our copy contains the frontispiece in four states, which is very rare, Cohen-De Ricci knowing of two states only. The frontispiece is titled "La Vérité jamais n'entre chez les Sultans, qu'en prenant une voile à la porte" (Truth never enters the Sultan's rooms without taking a veil at the entrance)". This allegory was designed by Jean Michel Moreau le Jeune (1741-1814), the most famous as well as the most prolific French book illustrator of the period. Imbert's fables are not illustrated but the book is well produced and nicely adorned with charming woodcut and typographical book decoration.

Fine copy, from the library of Hans Fürstenberg with his bookplate.- (A single quire sl. browned).
Cohen-De Ricci p. 507 (the other variant issue, dedicated to Madame la Dauphine); Cioranescu 34348; not in Fabula Docet, or Anne Stevenson Hobbs, Fables.
