(Selenopoli) (Florence?), For sale: Florence, Stamperia Bonducciana, 1771. 2 parts in one vol. 8vo. Contemporary half vellum, marbled boards. Engraved title t both parts within a nice rococo cartouche, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces. 246; 280 pp.

Extremely rare, anonymously published imaginary journey and 'Utopia', providing a very interesting light-hearted view of Enlightenment culture in Europe during the second half of the eighteenth century. The author, a 'philosophical traveller', tells us of the moves, habits and customs of the enlightenment century, and his observations are strikingly modern and often ironical. His criticism of current fashion is outspoken.
It already starts on the title-page with the motto: "Multa incredibilia vera, Multa credibila falsa". There are chapters with titles like "Vanità delle nazioni", "Delle Mode", "Del dispotismo", "Galleria di curiosità, e di cose perdute sulla terra, che si trovano raccolte nella luna" (referring to the fictive city of publication of the book: Selenopoli ('Moon-city')), "Dell'attrazione intellettuale per servire di supplemento alla fisica di Newton(!)", etc.

Good copy.- (First ca. 80 pp. slightly water stained).
We could only trace one other copy of this book (NUC).
