Beautifully bound in contemporary blindstamped pigskin, remnants of ties. Engraved allegorical title and 91 (out of 92: plate 51 is missing) numbered engraved plates, one of which is folding, 78 depicting people in costumes, dressed horses, floats, musicians etc. all taking part in different festivities like a ballet, fireworks and and other plays, and 13 engraved titles announcing the different spectacles, the texts of these titles are printed separately and pasted down, and are not part of the original engravings. As usual, plates 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 have engraved slips of paper pasted down on them with engraved large hearts ornamented with ears and eyes; to see the original engravings the slips of paper have to be lifted. Some of the engravings had been already used for Van Hulsen's 'Festzug' of 1616. 93 lvs. (title, dedication and 91 engravings). With: WECKHERLIN, Georg Rodolf. Beschreibung deß zu Stutgarten, bey den Fürstlichen Kindtauf und Hochzeit Jüngst-gehiltenen Frewden-Fests. Tübingen, Dietrich Werlin, 1618. Woodcut coat of arms on title and numerous woodcut innitials and head-pieces in the text. (2), 71 (1 blank ) pp. An extra leaf is bound between pp. 4 and 5: 'Cartel und Articul beym Ringrennen'. Ad 1: Extremely rare festival work describing and illustrating the festivities organized on the occasion of the baptism of Duke Ulrich, the son of Duke Johann Friedrich of Württemberg and the marriage of the Duke's brother Lüdwig Friedrich and Magdalena Elisabeth, countess of Hessen. Although the book is by Van Hulsen, one of the engraved titles, nr. 23, is signed by Matthias Merian. The series following this title (nrs. 23-30) are ascribed to Merian whereas some of the other series are believed to have been made by Friedrich Brentel, his name and monogram appearing on 13 plates. The main theory is that Merian and Brentel are responsible for the plates with their names and that the rest of the plates can be ascribed to Van Hulsen. Two years earlier Von Hulsen had published a comparable illustrated work on the occasion of the baptism of another son, Friedrich, during 10-17 March 1616: Repraesentatio der Fürstlichen Aufzug ... In 1979 a facsimile-edition was published in de series Stuttgarter Hoffesten, 2. Ad 2: Description of and regulations issued for the festivities, illustrated in the first work. Georg Rodolph Weckherlin was also a well-known poet whose poems were published in 1972 by Chr. Wagenknecht in the famous Reclam series at Stuttgart. Fine copy.- (Some leaves with tears, some slight foxing at places)
Ad 1: cf. Lipperheide I, 2586 (partly coloured copy, with plate 92 missing); not in Ornamentst. Sammlung Berlin; the copy in the Herzog August Bibl. at Wolfenbüttel is on the internet: <http//diglib.hab.de/drucke/36-17-4>; ad 2: Lipperheide I, 2587.
