On the origins of kissing

With fine engraved allegorical frontispiece, and 6 engraved almost half-page charming plates in text, by M. van der Eyk. (16), 223, (1 blank) pp. First edition of a collection of jocular poetry by Hendrik van Huls or Hulst, born at Delft in 1685. He was a portrait painter of profession, and also the author of popular farcical poetry. The present collection includes a poem on the origin of kissing, a farmer's courtship, and the explanation of the so-called "Quakers vermaaning" (Quakers admonition): "Het eind der kwelling van een Maagd, Is een Gallant die haar behaagt" (The end of the suffering of a Virgin, Is a betrothed whom she finds pleasure in). This last piece however, was, according to Scheepers, not from the pen of Van Hulst. Good copy.- (Blank corner of frontispiece restored; sl. waterstained at the end).
