First edition of an important historical work on the early Netherlands by Matthijs van der Houve, Lord of Kampen (1577-1638) and friend of Constantijn Huygens. The work gives an overview of the constitution and government of the Dutch Republic of the Seven United Provinces, including lists of cities and villages, estates, nobility ('Ridderschp') per province (vol. 1) and an overview of the early history of the Netherlands till the year 863, including a treatment of the passages in the classical literature regarding this area.
There is a unpublished manuscript by Van der Houve with a continuation: Vervolg op de twee reeds uitgegeven deelen, zijnde de originele copie door den auteur zelven geschreven en ter uitgave gereed gemaakt, loopende van 863-1482. benevens een afzonderlijk memoriaal der voornaamste zaken.
Another issue of the first vol. appeared in Leiden with Jan Jansz van Dorp and Ditck Maire, also in 1636. An enlarged edition was published also in two issues in Leiden in 1645/6.
