Leiden, Raadhuispers (Jan van Hout), 1588. (24) pp. Four very rare and very finely produced collections of statutes and ordinances, for the greater part printed in civilité type, produced by the famous Raadhuispers (the official press at the Town Hall at Leiden), which was active from 1578-1609. The press was founded by Jan van Hout (1542-1609), town secretary of Leyden and a well-known Renaissance poet. He was the director of Leiden's municipal press from 1578 on. As town secretary, Jan van Hout rendered great services to the city of Leyden. Apart from administrating all of the municipal governmental departments, including the police, finance and justice, he also archived the town-papers, and took an active part in the founding of the University Library, serving as secretary to the Curators of the Leyden University as well. Ad 1: Statutes on the building of houses, walls and fences, promulgated by Jan van Hout, 27 March 1586. Ad 2: Statutes on midwives, chaplains and (abuse of) charity; statutes on the houses on the 'Grooten Bagijnhof', promulgated by Jan van Hout, 29-30 December 1586. Ad 3: Statutes on the brewing of strong beers; containing the 'Aenhang vande burgerlicke keuren ...' (Addition to the General statutes), promulgated by Jan van Hout, 17 March 1587. Ad 4: Ordinance on the width of waters and cannels in 6 parts; statutes on the cleaning of the streets and building regulations, promulgated by Jan van Hout, 15 August 1588. These beautifully printed statutes and ordinances are very rare: f.e. there are only 3 complete copies known of the third statutes (UL-A (2 copies), UL-U), and an incomplete copy in the Mun. Archives at Leiden. Good copies with continuing foliation from ix to xxxv in contemporary hand, also with some other contemporary annotations.
Ad 1: TB 6444; Van Someren 122; Overvoorde 3407, Leiden imprints, p. 60; ad 2: TB 6521; Overvoorde 3517; ad 3: TB 6548; Overvoorde 5825; ad 4: TB 6625; Overvoorde 2684; 2-4 not in Leiden imprints; 1-4 not in Carter & Vervliet.
