The first edition had appeared in Amsterdam, 1718-1721. Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719) intended his work as a new and indispensable work on the Dutch painters to replace Karel van Mander's Schilderboek, that treated the painters till 1604. The original edition was reprinted in 1943-53; this second edition was the basis for the reprint published in 1976 (Amsterdam, N. Israel). Interleaved copy bound in 6 large volumes (260x200mm.) and a separate volume with the plates: the engraved title, portrait of Arnold Houbraken by Jacob Houbraken; 42 plates with one to four portraits of Dutch painters, and 5 plates with requisites for the painter, a 'clair-obscure' interior, a plate with emblems, 'Jupiter & Simele' (by Arnold Houbraken) and a plate with eight classical sculptures. Interleaved copy bound in 5 large volumes (260x200mm.) and a separate volume with the plates: the portrait of Van Gool by Jacob Houbraken engraved in Amsterdam in 1749 after the drawing by A. Scouman with a poem by A. Kuypers, 21 plates with two or three portraits of Dutch painters and a folding plates depicting the Drawing Academy at The Hague ('Afbeelding van 't Teken-Akademi der Haegsche kunstschilders') by S. Fokke (1751) after A. Schouman (1750). All the volumes, the 7 of Houbraken, as well as the 6 of Van Gool, with the ex-libris (ca. 74-64mm.) of the Belgian art-lover, bibliophile and connoisseur François-Jean-Joseph Mols (1722-1790), engraved by Saint-Aubis after Gravelot with the motto 'Aeternum sub sole nihil' underneath: three Cupido's are studying in a library (see: B. Linnig, Bibliothèques & Ex-libris d'amateurs belges aux 17e, 18e et 19e siècles (Paris 1906), p. 50-3). It is Mols who, on the extra leaves, added the many remarks, new stories and anecdotes and corrected the text on many places. Mols owned a magnificent library and a fine art collection. He did much research on the lives of Dutch and Flemish artists and he has added his remarks also in the collection of lives of Flemish painters by Descamps, now in the Royal Library at Brussels. He is also the author of a number of treatises on the life of Rubens, also in the Royal Library, Brussels. Very good copies of both works with all the plates of the famous portraits of Dutch artist in good impressions, uniformly bound in 13 vols. (interleaved). - (Bindings rubbed).
