Posthumously published work by the author of the first textbook on differential calculus, expanding on the same subject
HOSPITAL, Guillaume François Antoine le Marquis de L'.Traité analytique des sections coniques et de leur usage pour la resolution des equations dans les problêmes tant déterminez qu'indéterminez. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Paris, Montalant, 1720. 4to. Contemporary mottles calf; spine gilt in compartments, with title lettered in gold; red painted edges; marbled endpapers. Vignet on the title, with 33 numbered folding ngraved plates with 263 geometrical figures and one full-page unnumb. plate; interesting woodcut head- and tail-pieces,one engraved head-piece at the beginning of the text on p. 1. (8), 459 pp. Original edition of this mathematical and geometrical work by Guillaume-François Antoine de L'Hospital (Marquis de Sainte-Mesme, Comte d'Entremont; 1661-1704), a student of Johannes Bernoulli and correspondent of Leibniz, whose Abhandlung (1684) on this subject De l'Hospital had read (Kowalewski, Grosse Mathematiker, 115). The intelligent and spirited Marquis who, after a military career, devoted his life entirely to mathematical sciences, has also published the highly esteemed first textbook on differential calculus: Analyse des infiniment petits pour l'intelligence des lignes courbes (1696). At his death L'Hospital left the completed manuscript of a second book: this Traité analytique des sections coniques, which was published in 1720 (according toRoller/Goodman the original edition was published in 1707 and was the edition of 1720 a new issue under a new title). L'Hospital was a major figure in the early development of the calculus on the continent of Europe. He advanced its cause not only by his scientific works but also by his many contacts, including correspondence with Leibnitz, Bernouilli and with Chr. Huygens. Fontenelle tells us that it was he who introduced Huygens to the new calculus. Very good copy with wide margins.
