(4), 14; (4), 9, (1 blank) pp.

First edition of the first part and enlarged second edition of the second part of a beautiful engraved plates book on hydraulic engineering, pictorial teaching in detail all what was known at the time about inland water management and the building of dams, locks, bridges and the like, a technical science the Dutch were then and still are experts in. The text only briefly explains what is shown on the plates, which were designed by Tileman van der Horst for the first part and by Polley for the second part. The last leaf of the text at the beginning of the second part explains the illustrations on the 6 plates added at the end.
As models for the illustrations in the first part the big lock near Muiden with its lift bridge was used, also the locks near Hamel on the Weser in Germany, built after designs by Issak Stoel, and the turning  bridge over the 's-Gravelandse Vaart near the Fortresse Uitermeer, built by Gysbert Stoel after the designs of the Dutch state engineer Vinck, etc. Polley who drew the plans and designs for the second part was town architect and director of the sawing mills at Zierikzee, in Zeeland.
The designs on the added plates were made after the existing underwater lock at Den Horn, which served to discharge  the water from the Beemsterpolder into the Zuiderzee. Of interest  is also the design of an river icebreaker, illustrated on the last  added plate.

EXTRA ADDED: First edition of the text-book of both parts in one volume, of 60 and 52 pages respectively, at the time published separately in octavo next to the large folio editions. Beautiful copy in marbled calf, spine ribbed and gilt, with the gilt coat-of-arms of the Count of Kalenberg in centre on both sides, marbled edges, and with the bookplate of Charles van der Elst on first endpaper. N.B. the text also includes the description of a sluice on the Weser in the County of Kalenberg. Cf. De Jonghe, Armorial III, 687.

Fine large paper-copy, from the library of the Leyden scientific society "Mathesis Scientiarum Genetrix", founded in 1785, and intended to educate and teach young people from poor families for scientific and technical jobs, especially for the navy.
