Lavishly illustrated Book of Hours designed for the Spanish Court, 'one of the finest books ever produced in the Officina Plantiniana at the time of the Moretusses'
HORAE - Officium Beatae Mariae Virginis, Pii V. Pont. Max. iussu editum. Nunc pluribus quàm hactenus umquam figuris aeneis illustratum. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Antwerp, Ex officina Plantiniana (Balthasar Moretus, the widow of Johannes Moretus & Johannes Meursius), 1622 (Colophon: Balthasar Moretus, 1621). 4to. Early nineteenth-century dark violet morocco, lavishly gilt with elaborate borders on both sides with the name of the owner ('Marchesa Eleonora Bentivoglio Crivelli') stamped in gold, spine gilt in compartments with title lettered in gold, gilt binding edges, gilt inner dentelles, also on the first and last silk fly-leaves, g.e. Preserved in its original gold tooled leather slipcase. Title and text printed in red and black, engraved vignette of the Virgin with child, with the coat of arms of Archduke Albert & Duchess Isabella on the title, 57 large engraved full-page plates and 38 smaller engravings and vignettes (some of them used more than one time). (40), 696, (4) pp. A splendid copy of the third edition of this large, de-luxe and lavishly illustrated Book of Hours, originally produced according to the wishes of the Archduke Albert, the ruler of the Southern Netherlands on behalf of the Spanish King, himself. The first edition appeared in 1600 with 25 full-page plates engraved by the famous engraver Theodor Galle; the second edition was printed in 1609 with no less than 57 engraved plates, 25 of which are the same as in the first edition. 30 of the new plates are also by Theodor Galle, 2 by Charles Mallery (1571-after 1635, the son-in-law od Theodor Galle). The same plates are in our copy of the third edition of 1622 (1621). It is recorded that Archduke Albert actually used a copy of this Book of Hours for his private devotion, spending more than two hours a day reading and praying. The edition was designed especially for him and Isabella in a unusual large format and printed, in compliance with his wish, in a large type found. The Book of Hours was produced with the objective to appeal to wealthy circles around the Spanish Court or to those who wanted to belong to these circles. It was illustrated therefore with engraved plates only, in stead of the more usual woodcuts in this type of book. The success of this Book of Hours is apparent from the fact that a second edition was published in 1609 which was illustrated in an even more magnificent way: 57 in stead of the original 25 plates. Our copy belongs to the third edition with the same number of plates. Contents: p. (1): Title (verso blank). p. (3-8): Dedication to Albert and Isabelle, signed by Johannes Moretus. p. (9-12): Summarium constitutionis ... Pii Papae V ... p. (13-14): Paulus Papa V ad futuram rei memoriam. p. (15): Privilege, dated Brussels 17 January 1621. p. (16-30): Calendar. p. She was the daughter of Il conte Gerolamo Bentivoglio, 'Senatore di Bologna' and Marianna dei Marchesi Spada. On 12 February 1800 Eleonora married with Don Enea Crivelli (1765 - Milan - 1821), a 'consigliere del commune de Milano'. Eleonora died in Milan in 1844. Splendid copy in excellent condition in a beautiful early nineteenth century 'fanfare binding' and in its original leather slipcase.- (Bottom of slipcase lacking).
