(52), 152 pp.

First and only edition of this poem on Venice by the Dutch poet and bookseller Jan van Hoogstraten (1662-1756) who lived in Gouda. He was the son of the publisher and poet François van Hoogstraten, brother of the poet and physician David van Hoogstraten and cousin of the famous painter Samuel van Hoogstraten.
Jan van Hoogstraten was often compared to Vondel by his contemporaries. He was a passionate man, and his taste for wine and women is clearly present in his poems. The present work, consisting of three books, praises the independent, rich and powerful Republic of Venice as an example for Holland and  Amsterdam. Interesting are the frontispiece ('Lof van Venetie'), vignette and  head-piece, finely executed by Jan Wandelaar, who also painted a portrait  of the poet. Laudatory poems by G. Cinq, A.H. Westerhoven, L. Steversloot, Pieter Langendyk, J. Houterkens, H. vande Gaete, M. Nieuwkerk, T. Bokkalyn and his son precede the work.

Good copy with the book label of P.P.C. Lammens.- (Binding somewhat stained).
