Good copy of  a extensive historical, geographical and genealogical 'dictionary' or encyclopedia, started by the poet and philologist David van Hoogstraten (1658-1724). In his youth the author spent a lot of time with famous fellow Rotterdam citizens, such as Petrus Rabus, Joachim Oudaen, Heyman Dullaert, Frans de Haes and Antonides van der Goes. Especially Oudaen and Dullaert taught him the art of poetry, and he showed both of them his respects by publishing the poetry of Dullaert and the biography of Oudaen after they died.
Van Hoogstraten studied medicine and started working as a physician in Dordrecht. In the course of time he started to satisfy his hunger for classical studies, and accepted a subordinate job at the gymnasium of Dordrecht to translate Latin poems into Dutch. From Dordrecht he went to Amsterdam where he became conrector of the Latin school. After the author's death in 1724 his work was continued by J.L. Schuer, the author of a well-known history of the Netherlands, and Matthaeus Broërius van Niedeck (1677-1743), the author of famous and well-illustrated books on the river Vecht, Kennemerland and of the Kabinet van Nederlansche en Kleefsche oudheden. The present dictionary is a very good example of a typical eigthteenth century reference book, presenting all of the available knowledge to a learned public and helping to establish the great tradition of encyclopedic dictionaries. At the time this dictionary was considered to be very reliable and was often consulted.

Good set.
